European Union or EU is pushing African Union or AU Peace and Security Council to consider Commission of Inquiry report on South Sudan human rights abuses and follow its findings up urgently for action.
In a statement written in Brussels, EU observes that every additional day that passes without peace increases the risk of renewed conflict and worsens already dreadful humanitarian situation of long suffering South Sudanese.
The Union recommends that it is crucial for human rights’ abuses perpetrators to be held accountable and that justice must be part of the peace process.
EU calls on President Salva Kiir and SPLM/A in Opposition leader Dr Riek Machar not to miss another opportunity to deliver on their commitments.
The Union warns that recent cabinet decision to modify South Sudan Transitional Constitution to extend presidency and National Legislature’s mandate must not be used as a reason to delay reaching a peace agreement beyond March 5.
