United Nations Secretary-General described power sharing as the vital formula to sustain peace in South Sudan.

Ban Ki-moon in a statement on Tuesday, urged President Salva Kiir and Opposition leader Riek Machar to put the interests of their people ahead of their own for peace to flourish.

He regretted that neither of the two leaders compromised on a mutually acceptable power-sharing formula, calling on them to prepare for the next round of talks that would focus on expeditiously ending the conflict.

The UN chief also reechoed his call on both parties to ‘urgently and strictly’ adhere to the Cessation of Hostilities agreement signed on January 23, 2014.

Mr Ki-moon commended efforts of mediators and Heads of State and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development for tireless and commitments to broker a peace agreement.

He said UN stands by ready to assist in efforts to engage all involved parties.
