United Nations or UN Security Council ‘condemned in the strongest terms’ a series of clashes between government and SPLM/A in Opposition forces in Unity and Upper Nile States between October 26 and November 2.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Council voiced ‘grave concern’ that the UN base near Bentiu was once again in hostilities and that the new fighting was ‘magnifying a serious humanitarian crisis’ in the country.
It demanded an immediate end to all violence, reiterating its demand to end human rights violations and abuses of international humanitarian law.
The statement followed UN Mission in South Sudan head Ellen Margrethe Loj briefing to the Council in New York on Tuesday through video conference in Juba.
She said the recent eruption of violence demonstrated lack of commitment to peace and political settlement process by both sides.
Ms Margrethe added that the recent fighting forced 340 civilians to UN bases and left several civilians dead and wounded and increased pressure on already overwhelming humanitarian crisis.
