World Food Programme or WFP on Monday distributed food to seven thousand nine hundred people in Abyei and expected to continue in the coming days targeting fifteen thousand individuals in five locations in the area.

WFP Country Director Adnan Khan in a statement on Friday said the recent assessment allowed them to identify humanitarian needs and gaps in previously unsupported locations to be addressed both in short and long terms.

He added that beyond providing food aid, they also look at sustainable solutions to enhance the food security and nutrition situation of vulnerable people in area.

Mr Khan said WFP is grateful for the assistance of Abyei Joint Oversight Committee, the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei, the Humanitarian Aid Commission and the government that enables them assess and distribute food assistance.

He pledged to continue to rely on their support while implementing other activities in the near future.
