El Obeid Catholic Diocesan Education Coordinator confirmed the outbreak of measles prompting the closure of lower classes at Primary Schools of Kauda and Karga areas of Nuba Mountains.
Sister Cathy Solano said the administrations decided to close from Kindergarten to primary six to prevent the disease from spreading after it reportedly claimed lives of seven children in Kauda last month, Voice of Peace reported.
She explained that the first case appeared on July 28 among pupils of St Vincent Ferrer Primary School and that two more cases were reported on July 29 in the same school.
Sr Solano added that on July 30 three more cases were reported in the same school involving a P5 pupil.
The Coordinator said 22 pupils of St John Evangelist Primary School were also infected.
She said a medical officer; Sr Catherine Tukay is enlightening local communities with health education and how to report cases to the hospital.
Sr Solano said lack of measles vaccination was bringing great risk to the population, urging families to report to any health centre suspected signs and symptoms.
