Oxfam’s South Sudan Country Director said the warring parties broke the sixty days to set aside their differences manifested by continuous fighting to destroy the country as famine looms.

In a statement on Sunday, Tariq Rieble said the parties promised to end the fighting and establish a transitional Government of National Unity, but on the eve of the date set, talks faltered rendering the commitment seemingly impossible to achieve.

He called for an end to war, saying there is no military solution, urging the parties to commit to peace and immediate lasting ceasefire to prevent further deterioration.

The Director said there must be zero tolerance on obstacles to aid by all parties for communities trapped by fighting to safely access life saving assistance.

Mr Rieble said political will to compromise was needed on both sides to reach a swift solution and that they would strive to meet the rising needs of the people.

He said there is an urgent need for the international community to show a united front and use all their diplomatic influence to ensure both parties engage meaningfully in the talks and listen to the diversity of voices in South Sudan.
