Food and Agricultural Organization, FAO warned that some 3.5 million people in South Sudan are now experiencing food insecurity.
In a statement, FAO Deputy Director-General for Operations Dan Gustafson told a humanitarian pledging conference in Oslo that South Sudan is at risk of famine unless humanitarian assistance is provided now.
He warned that the food security crisis in the country is now worsening and spreading westward to areas previously less affected.
The central message from the conference was that peace, security, stability and
Unhindered humanitarian access remained the most critical factors in preventing famine and in supporting affected populations.
Mr Gustafson said it was the responsibility of the conflicting parties to allow peace, security, and unhindered humanitarian access to affected population.
