Juba City Legislative Council Chairperson on Thursday said city authorities came up with a bye law to prohibit public smoking by fining public smokers with 100 South Sudanese Pounds, equivalent to one week imprisonment.
Michael Lodu Allah Jabu announced that smoking in public places including hospital, mini-buses and offices would not be tolerated.
He warned that whoever violates the bye law would be fined without compromise.
The Chairperson added that Juba Mayor issued an order prohibiting shisha selling and smoking in markets and that the council assented to the order to ban tobacco smoking.
A chest Physician at Juba Teaching Hospital earlier on urged lawmakers to set rules against unnecessary smoking in the country, saying smoking causes cancer.
