Terekeka County authorities reported that shortage of clean drinking water hit Reggo Payam; making residents there to drink dirty water collected from roadside pits.
In a statement obtained by CRN Mirinda Boma Executive Chief Michael Muni Ladu said, ‘Water is a very big problem. People here cook and eat once in a day because when you eat, you need to drink water, but water is hard to get’.
He added that Central Mundari region has serious water shortage, lamenting that the County has no money to address the problem at the moment.
Terekeka County Commissioner Jacob Gore Samuel called on Norwegian People’s Aid, NPA and other aid agencies to build water catchment dams in the areas to alleviate the problem.
There is only one borehole in Reggo Payam located at Gwulukuk village, serving over 19 thousand people in Buju, Buranga, Lengi, Mirinda and Mogiri Bomas.
Mogiri Boma Chief Alteib Benansio Reaka said least 23 people died in the area because of thirst between 1980 and 2012.
Episcopal Church of South Sudan and Sudan Bishop in Terekeka, Paul Modi appealed to aid agencies to drill more boreholes in the area and train local farmers in ox-plough technology to promote cassava and groundnut production for improvement of livelihood.
