Yei on Friday remembered the former South African President who passed away on Thursday in Johannesburg.
Yei Mayoress Oba Cecilia Tito told the crowd at Yei Freedom Square that the death of Nelson Mandela reminded South Sudanese about the death of John Garang de Mabior and those who died during the liberation struggle, Easter Radio reported.
She explained that Nelson Mandela struggled not only for Africa, but fought for world’s peace, freedom, democracy and unity.
The Mayor said during Mandela’s presidency, he promoted youths, women, and children development.
The crowd held a moment of silence to remember the late Nelson Mandela and liberation strugglers in South Sudan including Dr John Garang.
The Mayoress was speaking during a campaign against sexual exploitation and abuse in Yei.
The campaign was organized by United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS as part of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
The campaign concluded by a friendly netball match where Yei team was awarded a trophy after beating UNMISS police netball team 115 points to 101 points.
