The UN plans to link Pochala and Akobo, in restive Jonglei State, with a grabble road to bring some development to the area.

UN Resident Coordinator for the Activities of Development Toby Lanzer made the announcement in Juba on Tuesday during media meet and greet event.

He said the road will be built by UNDP during the dry season to help the local communities to access markets and give them ‘a better sense of prosperity.’

Mr Lanzer told CRN that the 90-km Pochala-Akobo road will be built with the involvement of the local community and will be ‘low cost.’

He told the journalists that South Korean engineers serving with UNMISS are studying the possibility to connect Bor and Pibor with a new road.

The Resident Coordinator added that the road would be ‘tremendously expensive’ because the area is made of back cotton soil.

Mr Lanzer said the Juba-Bor road would cost between 300 and 400 million US dollars.

He added that building roads in South Sudan is very expensive and it will take time before all state capitals are connected by all-weather roads.
