Civilians from Uror County of Jonglei State on Monday attacked and overpowered 35 soldiers in Duk County and captured one gun from them.

Duk County MP Philip Thon Leek told journalists that the civilians were heavily armed and the army withdrew during the attack.

He said the soldiers were deployed by Duk County Commissioner to arrest culprits from Uror who murdered a woman on Sunday during what he described a provocative dance.

MP Thon pointed out that the acting State Governor did not take any action to curb the situation.

He said the state was impotent following the resignation of Kuol Manyang Juuk to become Defence minister at the national government.

The MP revealed that the attack was a premeditated plan to annex the eastern part of Duk County to Uror hatched by local politicians who intended to create more constituencies in Uror County.

MP Thon observed that the civilian disarmament that took place in the state was impartial, leading to more re-armament.

He called on the national government to speed up the process of electing a new governor for Jonglei State.
