The Council of Ministers gave the green light to the construction of the Fula Falls Dam to supply the electricity the country needs for its development.
Acting Government spokesperson Atem Yak Atem told the press after Friday’s ordinary cabinet sitting that the electricity and dams minister David Deng Athorbei presented the policy and plans for the electrification of the country.
Mr Yak noted that only one percent of the population had access to electricity and power supply was key for the industrialization of the country.
He said that the cabinet chose hydropower as the most viable source of electricity.
The Cabinet approved the construction of the Fula Falls dam in the White Nile.
The dam is able to produce 890 megawatts of electricity, enough to supply the whole country.
Mr Yak said the Fula Dam would be built as soon as the Government got funds.
He added that the project would take six years to be built.
Mr Yak said the import of electricity from Ethiopia and Sudan would be a future option, after Fula was constructed.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit chaired the meeting that also reviewed the situation of South Sudanese students in Cairo and the visit of the oil minister to China.
