SPLA wins MTN independence marathon

The army won the MTN Independence mini marathon that took place on Sunday in Juba.
 
The SPLA, who registered as corporate company, was first, followed by Central Equatoria and MTN, Bakhita Radio reported.
 
The marathon event was organised for five, ten and 21 kilometres.
 
Youths and Sports Undersecretary Edward Settimo said next year the event will be international to allow athletes from around the world to compete.
 
He said the marathon will be increased to 42 kilometres.
 
Mr Settimo added that South Sudan is becoming a member of International Athletics Federation and the independence marathon will be an annual event.
 
MTN top officer Phillip Besimire said the company will ensure that the marathon is organized annually to allow athletes from around the world to compete in Juba.
 
He thanked all participants, sponsors and the police for making the event a success.
 
Youth, Culture and Sports minister Cirino Hiteng ran the five-kilometre race.
 
MTN organised the independence mini marathon with funds from Kenya Commercial Bank, Equity Bank, UAP and other companies.
