Central Equatoria brought some sheep from abroad to crossbreed and improve local species.
Central Equatoria Minister for Animal Resources and Fisheries Gerald Francis told reporters in Juba on Thursday that his ministry brought nearly 550 sheep from Kapoeta, in Eastern Equatoria, to crossbreed with sheep to be brought from Holland, Bakhita Radio reported.Mr Gerald explained that the crossbreeding will produce a unique type of sheep that is suitable for the local and international markets.
He said multiplication of healthy animals in the state will reduce meat prices and poor people will be able to eat meat at least twice a week.
Mr Gerald said his ministry intends to boost competition of livestock for the international market.
The sheep are temporarily accomodated at Central Equatoria Livestock, Poultry and Fisheries Demonstration Farm formally known as MAFAO.
Director General George Kamilo said his ministry is intending to introduce dairy cows soon in order to produce milk locally and reduce imports.
