UAE, the United Arab Emirates, expressed interest in building a new international airport in South Sudan.

Acting government spokesperson Madut Biar Yel told journalists at the end of Friday’s Council of Ministers that the government and the UAE reached an understanding to construct a new international airport.

He said details about the place and costs were yet to be worked out with the relevant ministries.

Mr Biar added that the UAE offered to build six primary schools and three medical centres in South Sudan.

The announcement followed a report by Vice President Riek Machar Teny on his visit to the Dubai Conference.

Last year, the Government announced that it intended to upgrade Rumbek airstrip with a tarmac runway in time for the Independence Day celebrations.
