The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to South Sudan has warned that unless Jonglei community leaders and government authorities take decisive action to stop the violence, stability in the whole state will be at risk.
In a press release issued on Friday, Hilde F. Johnson said reoccurring spates of violence are extremely serious and can jeopardize everything that has been achieved so far for peace and reconciliation in Jonglei.She said she was very worried, and strongly urged immediate action by government and community leaders to ensure stability.
Ms Johnson called for restraint and urged communities to refrain from retaliation.
She warned that if not heeded, the cycle of violence would continue and everyone would lose, including their own community.
Ms Johnson called for renewed efforts to protect all civilians while containing the threat from David Yau Yau’s rebellion.
She called on Yau Yau and his armed youth to stop all attacks.
