UNHCR, the UN agency for refugees, and the World Health Organization confirmed that 3,319 people are infected with Hepatitis E and 69 died in four refugee camps in South Sudan.
The UN agencies said the disease is affecting refugees in Yida, Jamam, Doro and Yusuf Batil camps.
Yusuf Batil alone has 71 percent of all reported new cases.
Director-General of Community and Public Health in the national Ministry of Health Samson Paul Baba visited the camps this week.
He said the hepatitis E situation is a serious concern to the government.
Dr Baba appealed to all partners to put every effort to contain the outbreak as soon as possible.
UNHCR’s Public Health Officer in South Sudan Brendan Dineen said the agency is trying to deal with the disease quickly and efficiently.
Claudia Perlongo, a UNHCR Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Officer working in Yusuf Batil, said officials met with the government and partners to harmonize the educational messages regarding Hepatitis E.
She added that UNHCR, the South Sudanese government, and all partners in all the camps were on high alert for the detection of Hepatitis E.
