A medical charity said malaria mortality rates were reduced from eight to three percent in Northern Bahr El Ghazal state.

Doctors without Borders, also known as MSF Project Coordinator Abdelkader Tlidjane told CRN via phone from Aweil that between March and August this year, MSF admitted over 1,600 children and 40 died.

He said it was the highest child mortality rate ever from malaria in the Northern Bahr El Ghazal state.

Mr Tlidjane added that in Aweil Hospital the rate of mortality has dropped significantly for about three percent.

He explained that some patients are brought in for treatment too late to be saved.

Mr Tlidjane said MSF will continue with an outreach campaign outside Aweil town that helped bring down malaria related deaths.

Aweil area registered severe flooding and people live in makeshift dwellings along the roads and railway, exposed to mosquitoes.
