Intellectuals and chiefs in Wau County of Western Bahr El Ghazal state have strongly voiced out views rejecting the transfer of the county headquarters from Wau to Baggari Payam.
The state government last Tuesday appointed a Mayor to Wau Municipality and ordered the immediate transfer of the county headquarters to Baggari payam, Voice of Hope reported. The contestants argued that the decision did not pass through the state parliament.
The two communities of Baggari and Wau were not consulted either.
During the first intellectual consultative meeting with the Mayor on Sunday morning, the intellectuals singled out that they welcomed the municipal creation but rejected the transfer of the county headquarters.
They said Wau County and Wau Municipality could coexist administratively in the same location.
The intellectuals underlined that to take the town to the villages is done by creating new counties, not through transfers.
The participants said if the state authorities did not listen to their call, the new mayor should resign immediately.
This was the third time that the transfer decision has been turned down by the local leaders of Wau and the opposition is growing stronger.
