Small salaries are the biggest challenge teachers face in Western Equatoria State.
Yambio County Education Director Jeremiah Ismail told Anisa FM that teachers receive a very small pay although they were sacrificing themselves for the good of the nation.He appealed to the government to adjust teachers’ salaries according to the new Education Act in order to retain teachers and attract new ones to the profession.
Mr Ismail was speaking at the World Teachers Day celebration on Friday.
Yabongo Girls Day Secondary School teacher Santino Urusa Bernaldo expressed his gratitude for the celebration of World Teachers Day.
He said teachers needed a nationalistic spirit to keep doing their job because the salaries are low compared to other professions.
Every year the world celebrates the World Teachers Day on October 5, but offices and schools worked normally in Western Equatoria State.
