Two nuns were briefly arrested by the Police in Tonj, Warrap State, on Friday afternoon.
The nuns were accused of giving abortive medication to one girl from Saint Mary’s Hostel, Don Bosco FM reported.One of the nuns said the girl came to the mission clinic to ask for panadol for a headache and then accused them of giving abortive medicines.
Tonj Catholic Parish Priest James Pulikal said the girl’s accusation was a lie.
He condemned the arrest of the two nuns.
The situation calmed down in the evening through the involvement of government officials both from county and the state and the intervention of the Catholic Bishop Rudolf Deng Majak of Wau.
The nuns were released at the orders of Deputy Governor Akech Tong Aleu of Warrap state, former Tonj County Commissioner.
The police officer in charge was not available for comment.
