The situation in Rumbek East is calm and Sunday’s violent conflict between two communities in the county is under control.

Commissioner David Marial Gunke told Good News Radio on Monday that the conflict between Dur and Panakorbil communities was sparked by a revenge attack on a local sub chief.

He said that security officers were working hard to arrest those behind the attack, including those who planned an ambush on some cattle-camp youth popularly known as gelweng.

Commissioner Marial warned those involved in revenge attacks that the Government is committed to maintaining law and order.

He stressed that any community member taking the law in his or her own hands through acts of revenge will face the full force of the law.

Commissioner Marial urged community members to engage in constructive acts like farming because South Sudan needs peace.

He encouraged security agents deployed in Rumbek East County to move with speed to arrest those behind the conflict.

Revenge has been cited as one of the major causes of violent conflicts in South Sudan.
