Students from Lakes and Central Equatoria secondary schools are shining at the national inter-schools games being played in Rumbek.
David Gonye and Johnson Loge will represent South Sudan at a regional tournament that will take place in Burundi, after clinching the first and second places in the 10,000-metre race.David Gonye, from Central Equatoria State, crossed the finish line ahead of his long time rival from Johnson Loge from Eastern Equatoria on Saturday.
Gonye told Good News Radio moments after clocking 33 minutes and nine seconds that he was happy for his first ever victory, the beginning of a victorious career in athletics.
He said he was ready to represent South Sudan in Burundi.
Loge, who took more 48 seconds to finish the 10,000-metre run, was satisfied with the second place but complained about the poor condition of the track.
Rebecca Nyibol Dut from Lakes won the women’s 1,500 metres finals ahead of Magdalena Joseph from Western Bahr el Ghazal and Jamila Nakoro from Eastern Equatoria.
Adit Marial Buot from Lakes and Viola Derio from Central Equatoria clinched the top positions in the in the women’s 400 metres heats and Central Equatoria’s Jima Arkangelo and William Albeto took the lead in the men’s run.
Barista Bazilio from Western Bar el Ghazal and James Sawat Mapuo from Lakes State’s were first and second in the men’s 100 metres dash.
In the men’s shot put, Lakes’ James Malal recorded a 13.11-metre throw.
Lakes’ athletes Martha Athen, Teresa Tuta and Susan Awat were the best in the feminine shot put competition.
The curtain will fall tomorrow on the first South Sudan’s inter- secondary school national games.
