Traders are selling low quality maize flour in the markets well beyond expiring dates and mostly improper for human use.

The Director General for Standards and Metrology in the ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment, Mary Gordon Muortat, told Bakhita Radio this morning that maize flour on sale is of substandard quality.

She said the Directorate arrested two men for repackaging expired flour into new bags of 50 kilograms after cleaning maggots.

She added that 80 percent of the maize flour sold in the market is expired or rotten.

Dr Gordon said the Directorate is trying to trace the big stores that are supplying the market with expired goods.

She added that her staff is making daily visits to the markets to inspect the quality of flour on sale.

Dr Gordon said the quality of bread is also poor.

The directorate wants to regulate bread weight and baking quality.
