Communities from Jonglei state have pledged for peace and called for a comprehensive disarmament of civilians and for development.

John Ashworth was a facilitator at Jonglei State communities’ conference for peace, reconciliation and tolerance that took place in Bor last week. He told CRN that participants at the conference condemned Sudan’s aggression against South Sudan.

He said the people from all the communities were happy about the disarmament and they want it to cover everybody.

The facilitator added that people appreciated the protection and security the SPLA provided to them and their cattle, dispelling fears and concerns about the disarmament process.

Mr Asworth pointed out that people in Jonglei were concerned about underdevelopment.

He said the state should take up the issue of development with other partners.

He added that chiefs of different communities made peace with one another, pledged to regulate bride price, return abducted women and children and control the youth to avoid cattle raiding.

Mr Asworth added that chiefs have called for the rule of law to prevail and promised to take action and report against criminals within the communities.
