An official at Telecommunication Ministry said today that since Khartoum banned direct flights to South Sudan last April, it has disrupted postal services to Juba.
Postal Services Director General Francis Apaya told CRN that mail and parcels could not be sent directly from or to Juba even though South Sudan joined the Universal Postal Union last year because there is no exchange office in the country. He said since the flights stopped last month, postal services were disrupted because Khartoum was the only exchange office where mail and parcels were received and sent outside South Sudan.
Mr Apaya added that the Post Office received last week some mail from Ethiopia and that country promised to act as exchange office for South Sudan.
He explained that the ministry has applied to Kenya to be South Sudan’s exchange office until it sets up its own in Juba.
