SPLA forces have returned to their positions within South Sudan as tensions calmed down at the border with the Sudan following two days of heavy fighting.

Government spokesman Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press this afternoon that the deputy defence minister Majak Agot Atem briefed the Council of Ministers on the border situation.

He said the SPLA forces were attacked at Tashwin on March 26 and repelled the Sudan Armed Forces beyond Higlig.

The SPLA forces are back at their positions within South Sudan.

Dr Marial added that the situation at the front is calm.

He urged the Sudan Armed Forces to leave Shiramalanga and Balbala, two localities they occupied in Western Bahr El Ghazal one week ago to keep up with the de-escalation of tensions between the two countries.

Dr Marial said the national minister of defence and his team are in Addis Ababa discussing the security situation with their Sudanese counterparts.

South Sudan chief negotiator Pagan Amum left today for Addis Ababa together with his team to continue dialogue on outstanding issues with the Sudan, including Abyei and oil.

The Council of Ministers was chaired by vice president Riek Machar Teny.
