An Eastern Equatoria state official called on women to be lenient towards their husbands during the period of economic hardship hitting the nation due to the oil shutdown.

Acting governor Jerome Surur Gama made the call while addressing the crowd that celebrated yesterday International Women’s Day at Freedom Square in Torit.

Mr Surur urged women to accept whatever resources their husbands bring home due to the financial crisis.

The acting governor praised the women for their participation in the liberation struggle.

He said their contributions of food and water were critical to the struggle’s success.

Mr Surur asked women not to demand for 75 percent empowerment but be happy with half of the places not to enter into conflict with men.

The UN representative in Eastern Equatoria Winnie Babihuga observed that women are still subjected to domestic work for almost 24 hours per day.

She said it took long for women to realize equality and enjoy their full rights in the society, especially in the rural areas.

This year’s International Women’s Day was marked under the theme Empowerment of rural women to end hunger and works together to end violence against women.
