The Government of Sudan is committing crimes against humanity in Nuba Mountains, its military campaign aims at ethnic cleansing and the UN should sponsor an independent inquiry and refer the findings to the International Criminal Court.

This is the assessment of Aegis, a UK-based NGO to prevent crimes against humanity, after a fact finding mission to Yida Refugee Camp, in Unity State, and to some parts of Nuba Mountains.

Former UNDP chief in the Sudan, Makesh Kapila, who headed the Aegis delegation, told the press today in Juba that the crimes against humanity committed in Darfur are now being repeated in Nuba Mountains by the same actors but in a greater scale.

Dr Kapila appealed to the UN Security Council to form an independent commission to examine the evidence from the Nuba Mountains conflict and refer the findings to the International Criminal Court to indict the perpetrators.

Dr Kapila said Ahmed Haroun accelerated violence to new heights in Nuba Mountains since he was appointed governor of South Kordofan.

He added that the situation in Nuba Mountains is terrible, affecting 1.2 million people.

Some 300,000 were already displaced by the conflict that started in June of 2011.

He said that food production was disrupted the conflict and the crops cover only 25 percent of the needs of the population.

Dr Kapila urged countries to stop supplying weapons to the Sudan because they are aiding crime of mass murder.

He said the Sudanese forces use war material made in Iran, China, Ukraine, Russia and United States.

He asked the international community to bring new energy into the political solution for the genocide in Nuba Mountains.

Dr kapila urged the UN to declare a no-fly zone over Nuba Mountains while political discussions take place.
