LAKES TRANSITIONAL CONSTITUTION SIGNED AND GOVERNOR SWORN IN

Lakes State Transitional Constitution was signed into law on Saturday during a ceremony that also witnessed the swearing in of the State Governor.

Lakes State Governor Chol Tong Mayay pledged to bear true allegiance to the State, working hard towards the promotion of the common good, Good News Radio reported.

He also pledged to carry out his duties in a consultative manner, upholding the Constitution and the rule of law besides fostering the unity of the citizens and consolidating their democratic rights and the decentralized system of governance.

Lakes State Coordinator and Head of Office of the United Nations Mission for South Sudan (UNMISS), Renuka Chidambaram, congratulated the Governor and the people of Lakes State following the signing of the Transitional Constitution and the swearing in of the State Governor.

Ms. Chidambaram said the UN were partners of South Sudan.

Speaker of Lakes State Legislative Assembly John Marik Maku urged the new government to ensure good governance through the rule of law, transparency and accountability.

Mr Marik urged citizens to promote peace and security to attract international investors and ensure sustainable development and new jobs.

Governor Tong is expected to announce his new cabinet soon.

The celebration concluded with the official opening of Lakes State General Secretariat’s renovated building and a dinner at Rumbek’s State House.
