The council of ministers yesterday approved a new pension scheme for the Republic of South Sudan.

The acting minister for public service and human resource development Quong Kouth presented to the Cabinet a new pension scheme designed for the Republic of South Sudan, Bakhita Radio reported.

Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press that the new scheme was a very important step towards the consolidation of South Sudan’s economy and to improve the livelihood of civil servants.

Dr Marial said the new pension scheme includes some 3,000 civil servants who worked under the old Sudan pension system.

He added that the new pension scheme is very comprehensive and meets the needs of South Sudan.

The government is struggling to clear off heaps of files of the civil servants seeking pensions after retirement.
