Citizens from Unity State have sued a Swedish oil company for displacing locals while drilling for oil and indirectly contributing to the killing of people during the civil war.
James Nimred, executive director of Assistance Mission for Africa, said Lundin has been sued in a Sweden court for contributing to the displacement and killing of people in Unity State by paying large amounts of money to the government of Sudan. He added that Khartoum used the money to buy weapons that defeated the locals.
He said a team will be sent from Sweden to investigate the accusations in South Sudan.
Rev Nimred said thousands were displaced during the war and lost properties and others were killed and people expected some compensation for their losses.
He added that he hoped that the Government of South Sudan would intervene and help the victims of oil companies.
Rev Nimred said that this was not the first time the people of Unity sued an oil company.
He noted that a US company was sued in the US during the interim period but the locals lost the case because they did not present enough evidence to the court.
