Boda-boda operators in Yei town are to be issued new green number plates starting this week to identify them as public transporters.

The move follows Juba Boda-boda Association that last week commissioned the new green number plates to distinguished public and private motorbikes.

Yei River County Inspector for Traffic Police, Andrew Kenyi, told radio Easter that the initiative came from the National Interior Ministry in collaboration with the State department of traffic police.

He said that the traffic police in Yei town sent a delegation to Juba to collect the new number plates.

Mr Kenyi added South Sudanese will receive the new number plates first.

Foreigners in the business will have to apply through the Labour Union.

Mr Kenyi said the new policy can help address security issues.

He explained that when accidents happened it was difficult to identify the perpetrators because currently the number plates for private and commercial motorbikes are all white in Central Equatoria.

Mr Kenyi added that Traffic Police Department will be responsible for issuing the new number plates.

He appealed to the Boda-boda operators to cooperate.
