Residents of Torit today took to the streets in a peaceful procession in support of the decision of the national government to shutdown oil production due to unfair actions of the Khartoum government.
Governor Louis Lobong Lojore said the peaceful procession showed Eastern Equatorians’ solidarity with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the Council of Ministers’ decision to cap oil flows through Sudan. He added that the message is to the international community to see the demands of South Sudanese so they can help constructing a pipeline the new nation will be able to control.
Governor Lobong emphasized that the people of South Sudan need to prepare and sacrifice until the country reinstates its oil production, the main source of revenue for the young nation’s economy.
He called on the people of Eastern Equatoria state to support the government’s decision adding that the shutdown of oil production should have happened right after independence.
The Council of Ministers on Friday decided that all oil production should be halted in response to Khartoum’s confiscation of over three million barrels of crude oil worth 350 million US dollars.
