UN DRAWS PROGRAMME TO EMPOWER SOUTH SUDAN WOMEN

The UN has drawn up a programme to empower women in South Sudan in the fields of economy, politics, health and peacebuilding.

UN Women head Lucy Luguga told CRN News that the agency developed a programme to assist women in South Sudan engage in politics, economics and other sectors.

She said the first priority will be economic empowerment flavoured with literacy classes.

Ms. Luguga said the programme will also focus on strengthening capacities of women leaders at all levels of government.

She added that UN Women will also put more emphasis on women organisations so that they can pass on empowerment strategies to their sisters at grassroots levels.

Ms. Luguga mentioned that the programme includes protection of women and girls from domestic violence and awareness on diseases like HIV AIDS.

She mentioned that the UN agency will ensure that women are part of peace building in South Sudan because they are the most affected group, with children, whenever there is a conflict.

Ms. Ligiga said the programme to empower women in South Sudan will start next year.

She added that capacity building will be the main denominator for women to be able to have a more effective participation in society.
