The government of Uganda has denied any involvement in the death of rebel leader George Athor.

South Sudan Vice President Riek Machar said Mr. Athor was gunned down in combat with SPLA soldiers in Morobo County of Central Equatorial State, which neighbours Uganda and DR Congo.

Mr. Athor’s South Sudan Democratic Movement/Army (SSDM/A) disputed the official account and said President Museveni killed George Athor when the late visited Uganda and gave the body to the Government of South Sudan.

Uganda’s presidential spokesperson Mirundi Tamale told SCR News over the phone from Kampala that President Museveni has been involved in many reconciliation efforts across Africa, and he does not believe in assassination of enemies.

Mr. Tamale also said he was not aware of any official visit by Mr. Athor to Uganda.
