South Sudan Urban Water Corporation is completing a new water treatment plant in Wau that will benefit about half of the population of the town.
The new water project, that costs 4.5 million US dollars, is financed by USAID, the United States Agency for International Development, in partnership with the South Sudan Urban Water Corporation, Voice of Hope reported.Wau Water Corporation manager Joseph Akol Anei said the new water plant will produce 4,000 cubic metres of water per day.
The old plant supplies 2,000 cubic metres.
Mr. Akol said the Wau Water Corporation can now supply a total of 6, 000 cubic metres of water daily benefiting 40 percent of its residents.
He added that additional water plants are needed to supply another 10,000 cubic metres to cater for the whole population estimated at 170,000 people.
Mr. Akol said the new water treatment plant will use the pipelines already in place were supplying only 800 customers in Wau.
He added that there are plans to lay new water lines to reach other areas in the city.
Mr. Akol said the Water Corporation sells treated water to tankers, donkey carts and jerry can suppliers.
The works for the new water plant started in September last year.
The system is expected to be operational as soon as the new pipeline work is over.
