The national minister for animal resources arrived in Wau on Sunday to carry on his investigations on the outbreak of East Coast Fever affecting cattle in Jonglei but threatening to spread the to neighbouring states.

The epidemic infection was confirmed in Jonglei State and it is expected to move towards Lakes and Warrap states, Voice of Hope reported.

Martin Elias Lomoro told the staff at Western Bahr El-Ghazal state ministry of animal resources yesterday morning that his ministry is making a surveillance assessment in an attempt to minimize the spreading of East Coast Fever across South Sudan.

He added that so far there is no news of the killer parasite in Western Bahr el Ghazal.

Dr. Lomoro announced that his ministry is setting up a network of 11 laboratories to control diseases nationwide and be able to get international certification to export meat and live animals.

He explained that the laboratories network is part of an epidemic surveillance system that will protect public health and provide safe meat and fish to the local markets.

Dr. Lomoro moved to Warrap State yesterday morning to continue his East Coast Fever survey in Greater Bahr el Ghazal.

East coast is a filarial disease that weakens cattle in the same way malaria affects human beings.
