The Catholic bishop of Torit has appealed to Acholi and Ma’di community leaders to call on the people of Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria, to restore peace and calm as Christmas season approaches.
Johnson Akio Mutek urged the people to stop violence while the inter-Church Committee pursues peace and reconciliation between the two communities, Radio Emmanuel reported.
He added that inter-tribal violence is interfering with the pastoral programs of the Church.
Bishop Akio called on the community leaders to make a record of restoring peace between the Ma’di and Acholi communities that had been a symbol of good coexistence in Eastern Equatoria state.
He said the committee should help the government in the peace restoration process in Magwi County.
Bishop Akio advised the community leaders to be alert against false information and making speeches on a hurry before analyzing well the messages they receive.
He said some information can be misleading.
Bishop Akio made these statements on Saturday while closing a two-day peace and reconciliation consultative meeting in Torit.
The Inter-Church Committee organized the peace and reconciliation meeting for Acholi and Ma’di community leaders living in Torit as well as leaders from the neighbouring communities.
