Journalists from East African countries are embarking in a programme to combat maternal and child mortality in the region through grassroots reporting.

Solomon Hailemariam, Panos-Ethiopia Country Director, told Bakhita Radio that the exchange programme aims at sharing and exchanging experiences among journalists from East Africa.

He said journalists will be posted to a foreign country to report on maternal and child mortality and after one year return home to share their experiences.

Mr. Hailemariam said the programme is expected to be launched in March 2012 and will last for five years.

He added that journalists will contribute to the reduction of maternal and child mortality by spreading information on the ground.

Mr. Hailemariam disclosed that a team is already conducting feasibility studies to see if the five-year programme has legs to walk.
