South Sudan needs to strengthen its air defences in order to meet the crescent threat posed by Sudan’s air force to its territorial integrity.
Army spokesperson Colonel Phillip Aguer Panyiang told CRN News over the phone that the SPLA has to strengthen its air capacities in order to counter repeated violations of South Sudan’s air space by the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF).Col. Aguer said SAF is concentrating troops and equipment along the border with South Sudan and the SPLA is monitoring the situation.
He added that Khartoum is calling back and paying South Sudanese who served with SAF before the referendum to use as mercenaries in the war against South Sudan.
Col. Aguer said the situation in Upper Nile border areas is quiet with no clashes reported.
On Friday five SPLA soldiers died and 26 were wounded in clashes in Kuek.
Col. Aguer added that the enemy lost 24 combatants and 47 were injured.
