The President of South Sudan has launched a very strong appeal to the international community to assist his country in its march towards prosperity during his first intervention at the UN General Assembly.

South Sudan is the youngest member of the UN and yesterday President Salva Kiir Mayardit pronounced his first speech at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Mr. Kiir said that South Sudan’s march out of the abyss of poverty and deprivation into the realm of progress and prosperity is going to be long.

He asked the international community to partner with the new nation on that difficult journey.

Mr. Kiir said South Sudan is determined to diversify the economy using oil revenue to tap the potential the country has in other areas including agriculture to transform the country into a regional agro-industrial powerhouse.

He said South Sudan remains committed to peace with its neighbours and asked Khartoum to reinstate the recent Addis Ababa Framework on South Kordofan State and allow a quick demarcation of the border between the two countries.

Mr. Kiir said that his first speech at the UN General Assembly was yet another milestone on the long list of South Sudan’s achievements.

He thanked the international community for all support to South Sudan.
