A section of students from Rumbek Senior Secondary School yesterday morning held a peaceful demonstration, taking their voices to the State Legislative Assembly while demanding that the school reopens.
The group of over 20 students walked into the premises of the State lawmakers, expressing their grievances with slogans.They said they wanted their national school to reopen within 24 hours.
Elijah Goch Mayek, one of the students at the demonstration, told Good News Radio that the students were unhappy with the delayed reopening of the school.
He lamented the wasted academic year, saying that their academic year started late and that with this delay in reopening, the syllabus cannot be covered, affecting their performance in the final exams.
Lakes State Chief Whip and Acting Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Isaac Makur Buoch said the reopening and running of the national secondary schools is under the Executive arm of the government.
He promised to bring the grievances of the students to the attention of the relevant authorities.
Mr. Makur said he told the students to handle their problem with a sense of responsibility, bearing in mind that the State Ministry of Education is only hosting the school and that the solutions have to be provided by the Juba-based Ministry of Education.
The demonstrating students said the peaceful demonstration could turn violent and destructive if their grievances were not answered.
