Lakes State Minister of Agriculture has presented concrete plans to combat climate change through a forestation scheme and the introduction of quick growth crops.

Eli Magok Manyol told Good News Radio that his ministry wants to plant two to three million trees annually to replace those used for timber and charcoal.

He added that he wants also to introduce short term crops including sorghum, maize and groundnuts, to reduce the food gap in the State.

Mr. Magok said the project faces its own challenges that include lack of funds and shortage of skilled personnel.

The Minister said he is holding talks with the UN, USAID and EU to assist the state to implement the agricultural development plans.

South Sudan has a rich variety of hardwood and softwood timber yet to be exploited for the nation’s economic growth.
