The interior minister blamed an insurgent leader for Thursday’s attacks in Uror County of Jonglei State that left over 600 people dead.

Gier Chaung Aloung told the National Assembly yesterday that the intelligence unit on the ground has informed his office that George Athor supplied Lou-Nuer youths with thousands of AK47s and ammunitions, PKM machine guns and RPGs.

He added that the attack against Lou Nuer villages in Uror County displaced some 250 thousand people.

David Nailo Mayo, representing Budi County at the National Assembly, said a severe genocide will arise if security forces do not prevent further retaliation attacks in Eastern Jonglei.

Although the Assembly summoned both ministers of interior and defence, Nhial Deng Nhial was absent on an official mission to the UK.

The assembly voted some resolutions calling for the urgent deployment of SPLA and police forces in Jonglei, the delivery of humanitarian aid to the victims of recent tribal clashes in the state and the start of a reconciliation and peace process.
