TORIT COMMEMORATES WORLD PEACEKEEPING DAY

Torit resident on Monday joined UN peacekeepers to commemorate the blue helmets’ day.

The event started with the plantation of tree in secondary schools, Emmanuel Radio reported.

It included a procession around Torit and free health services at Freedom Square.

UN state coordinator for Eastern Equatoria, Winnie Babihuga said the event remembered people of who offered their services in pursuit of peace around the world.

She said the world paid tribute to over 120 thousand military, police and civilian serving worldwide under the UN blue flag.

Ms. Babihuga added that those who lost their lives in the cause of the peace were remembered.

The UN official said 173 peacekeepers lost their lives last year, due to natural disasters, violence, accidents and disease in Afghanistan, DR Congo and Haiti.

Ms. Babihuga rated Eastern Equatoria among the most peaceful states of South Sudan and hospitable for the peacekeepers.

The Wold Peacekeepers Day is marked on May 29, but Eastern Equatoria commemorated it one day later.
