A team of the visiting UN Security Council members travelled yesterday to Jonglei to assess a programme of livestock protection aimed at preventing cattle rustling.
Suzan Rice, US ambassador to the UN, told the press yesterday in Juba that the programme also helps curbing abduction of children which she said was one of the major challenges in South Sudan.She noted that after the visit the Council is aware that South Sudan has a range of internal, external and political development challenges to face.
Ms. Rice said the UN delegation visited also a way-station for returnees in Juba.
She applauded the efforts of UNHCR and IOM for transport and medical assistance provided to the returnees.
Ms. Rice said the UN and the international community will stand with South Sudan with the new nation builds itself.
She added that the international community will try to push for two viable states that are cooperative with friendly and mutual benefits.
Ms. Rice said the UN delegation also met civil society leaders in Juba.
