The UN has strongly called for an immediate withdrawal of unauthorized forces in the contested Abyei area.
The call was made yesterday by a delegation from the UN Security Council at the end of a two-day visit in Juba.US ambassador to the UN Suzan Rice told a press conference that the UN, the international community and the US are demanding an immediate, unconditional and complete withdrawal of unauthorized troops from Abyei.
She added SAF’s occupation of Abyei was a serious violation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Ms. Rice added that the UN Security Council will be following the situation in Abyei with urgency and great attention.
Russian ambassador to the UN Vitally Churkin said the Security Council was extremely depressed by the humanitarian tragedy taking place in the region.
The UN Security Council delegation planned to be in Abyei last Monday but it was prevented by the violent fighting that took place on Friday and Saturday in the area.
