A Lakes State citizen traced the culture of violence in the area to the availability of guns in the hands of civilians and urged them to surrender the weapons to build up peace.
Sunday Wek Awan told Good News Radio that guns owned by civilians during and after the war explain the killings in Lakes State. He added that generations before the civil war co-existed peacefully through reconciliation.
Mr. Wek advocated for a change from the culture of violence into a culture of peace, adding that the revengeful intercommunity attacks are reducing the population in Lakes State.
He urged those with guns, including the youths at cattle camps, to hand them back to the government.
Mr. Wek appealed to the entire community to avoid idleness and embark on nation building through hard work.
He advocated for agricultural development because the dependence on foreign aid and importation of foodstuff was not sustainable.
